Werribee Irrigation District Recycled Water Scheme
The Werribee Irrigation District Recycled Water Scheme is Melbourne's first large commercial recycled water project. The project aims to provide a sustainable future both for Werribee vegetable growers and the surrounding environment. The project has increased the reliability of water supply for local growers and has significant environment benefits to the area.

The project uses Class A recycled water from Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant that would otherwise be discharged into Port Phillip Bay. The Department of Human Services has classified Class A recycled water as safe for use on irrigation for food crops - including those eaten raw. EPA Victoria also supports its use.
Melbourne Water has an agreement to supply Southern Rural Water with Class A recycled water from the Western Treatment Plant. Southern Rural Water then distributes the water to customers who have signed agreements to purchase recycled water.
