Education at the Eastern Treatment Plant

Site tours are a great way for children and adults to learn about what happens to water that is flushed down the toilet or goes down the sink.

Melbourne Water regularly holds tours and community open days for both the general and multicultural communities at the Eastern Treatment Plant to show how sewage is treated and how effluent, biogas and biosolids are recycled. Walking tours take about 90 minutes, and are tailored to specific Victorian school curriculum outcomes.

Tour at the Eastern Treatment Plant

A display screen in the foyer of the plant models the computer software used by operators who manage the sewage treatment process. Visitors can see how much sewage enters the plant, and how much treated effluent is pumped out.

There is also a three-dimensional model of the plant that introduces the treatment process and shows how water flows around the plant. Interactive display quiz boxes help people learn which household items should and should not enter Melbourne's sewerage system, and computers provide easy access to all Melbourne Water's virtual exhibits and websites, including the Eastern Treatment Plant Explorer.

The Eastern Treatment Plant Explorer is perfect for those who can’t visit the site in person. The interactive, online program takes users on a virtual journey around the plant, allowing them to easily follow the sewage treatment process and learn about recycled water.
