Mordialloc Creek Improvements at Aspendale Gardens
Creating a new wetland to improve water quality, flood protection and wildlife habitat
Melbourne Water is planning to create a new freshwater wetland on Mordialloc Creek, with construction expected to commence in early 2011.
Wetland basins will extend within Mordialloc Creek from the bridge on Boundary Rd / Wells Rd in Aspendale Gardens (Mel Ref 92 J2) to Waterways (Mel Ref 93 E2).
We will make the creek wider and put in lots of new native plants. This will create a wetland that will:
- improve water quality by filtering stormwater from the Dandenong Valley area to the north of the wetland
- improve flood protection and drainage of this former swampland area
- look attractive and provide a place for native birds, animals and fish to live
- allow further industrial development on the north side of the creek in Braeside to occur.
We've built more than 40 wetlands across Melbourne since 2002 and this new wetland will be one of the largest.
What the improvements involve
To build this wetland, we will:
- remove the levee bank on the Braeside part of the creek
- remove soil and silt from the flood plain and place it on land on the Braeside part of the creek
- plant the wetland and the areas around it.
Earthworks could take between six and twelve months to complete, depending on weather and site conditions. We will begin planting once earthworks are complete, which would take a further six to twelve months to finish.

Update August 2010
While construction was initially planned to take place in 2009/10 the project has been delayed while we obtain a town planning permit from the City of Kingston to remove a few small patches of rare grasses near the creek.
We have also had to get approval from the federal Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts to proceed with the project, given that the endangered Growling Grass Frog may be present in the creek.
Our applications, together with expert reports, have been forwarded to the relevant organisations and we are awaiting response.
