Our vision

Working together to ensure a sustainable water future

Our vision is to ensure a 'sustainable water future' where:

  • our water supply is secure and high quality
  • our waterways and bays are healthy
  • biodiversity is improved
  • stormwater and treated wastewater is recycled or beneficially used

By 2018 we intend to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions and meet all our energy needs from renewable sources.

Our stakeholders

We place a high priority on building strong partnerships and relationships.

Our key stakeholders are customers, government, regulators, other water authorities, land developers, the community, and suppliers. They and our other partners - including alliance colleagues and research organisations - help us achieve our objectives.

Melbourne Water wishes to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we operate, the Kulin Nations and the Gunai/Kurnai people, and their elders past and present.

Delivering our vision

To deliver our vision, we have identified seven business focus areas. We’ve also established intentions, goals, and success indicators for each.

These goals and success indicators are outlined in our Strategic Framework. They’re aligned with the goals and key performance indicators laid out in our Corporate Plan and Water Plan. They also support Victorian Government policies relating to water supply (Our Water Our Future), the environment (Our Environment Our Future) and urban growth (Melbourne 2030).

Progress towards achieving our vision is outlined in our annual Sustainability Report.

Strategic Framework

Melbourne Water’s Strategic Framework formalises our commitment to achieving our long-term vision of a sustainable water future.

The Strategic Framework was first published in 2006. After extensive consultation with employees in 2008, the Framework was updated to ensure our long-term priorities, intentions, and success indicators remain robust and relevant in the face of significant challenges – especially climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity.

The Strategic Framework underpins Melbourne Water’s Water Plan and annual Corporate Plan as well as strategies and policies that guide our activities. It provides the context for our planning process, ensuring that social, environmental, and economic impacts are considered in all aspects of our business operations.

Organisational Chart

Managing Director
Asset Planning
Responsible for the planning for the assets and systems required to meet the medium to long term business objectives and strategies established by the Strategic Planning Group. Responsible for forward planning and capital investment prioritisation for the creation of new assets to meet growth, compliance and risk management objectives and will establish the requirements and parameters for managing our existing asset base.
Business Services
Responsible for the support of all areas of Melbourne Water by developing, implementing and maintaining strategies, systems, policies and procedures in relation to finance, Supply, information technology, risk and insurance, property, legal services (including Board support) and the management of the Werribee Agriculture business.
Capital Delivery
Responsible for the delivery of our capital works program. This includes the management of the program alliances to ensure delivery on time, on budget and functionality of our capital works.
Communications and Community Relations
Responsible for developing and implementing communication programs including policy, community education, media relations, website development and publications.
People and Safety
Responsible for strategies, policies and procedures in the areas of health and safety, culture and leadership and delivering a great experience for employees. Also responsible for payroll, recruitment, training, graduate and traineeship programs, internal communications, and reward and recognition schemes.
Operations and Maintenance
As the custodian of our existing assets, Operations and Maintenance is responsible for the operation and maintenance of our water, sewerage, waterways and drainage assets in accordance with public health, environmental, safety and regulatory obligations in line with community expectations.
Strategic Planning
Responsible for strategies and long-term projects to achieve sustainable outcomes for the organisation and community. Responsible for medium to long-term focus on issues including corporate strategy, pricing and regulation and major planning strategies across water and sewerage systems, energy and greenhouse management and the adoption of innovative technologies and scientific research.
Waterways
Waterways is responsible for managing stormwater and floodplains to protect the environment and provide a safe level of flood protection for communities; planning of infrastructure to service urban development; programs to protect and enhance the health of the region's rivers, creeks and wetlands.

Our performance planning and reporting process

Strategies, performance measures and key performance indicators are detailed in Melbourne Water's three-year Corporate Plan, reviewed on an annual basis.

The Water Plan summarises the outcomes Melbourne Water needs to deliver over a three-to-five year period, the actions to deliver those outcomes and the implications for revenue and tariffs.

Performance on progress towards our goals and objectives is reported in Melbourne Water's Annual Report and Sustainability Report.
